Authentic leadership is where you are genuine, self-aware, and transparent, it helps you to get where you want to go in leadership and business. When you display authentic leadership it means each unique self is put forward to lead.
When your leadership starts with authenticity the success is shown by working without compromise of our values or personality. An Authentic leader influences and inspires others and by revealing a bit of themselves they are able to transfer humility, credibility and trust to those around them. People want to be led by someone “real.”
When you come from a space of being an authentic leader you are able to consistently display who you really are as a person, and how you feel about your employees’ performance. This style of leadership will improve job satisfaction of your team, so they are more likely to remain with your business. This in turn creates a strong culture within the business and affects the bottom line results in a positive way. Any small business needs this authentic way of being to build the business to success.
Being emotionally intelligent (EQ) is another key aspect in becoming an authentic leader. Research shows that it is becoming more important than having IQ; intelligence quotient. The research shares that people with the average levels of IQ and with high EQ outperform people with high IQ, 70% of the time. A high EQ can be developed, even if you are not born with it. Spending time to increase your EQ will increase your own success, along with your teams. It will have an impact everything you say and do each day. The link between EQ and earnings are complimentary across all industries. In order to become successful you must increase your EQ.
Emotions are strong influencing factors as humans, yet we are not brought up to acknowledge them and we lack the skill to manage our emotions in the heat of the moment that life creates. We have emotional reactions to almost everything in our life, however we hardly notice them.
Being emotional intelligent means you can tune into your own emotions, and the effect they are having on you and others around you. When you have the awareness of your emotional triggers, you then have the capacity to control your thoughts, and reactions. A key is to know what triggers you. As emotions are a subconscious event we need to look for what triggers these emotions.
It also means you can intuitively tune into the emotions of team members and the effect they are having on others. As a leader you need to use all of your communication skills to help the other person. You become curious, you stop and listen, you pause and create silence to really see the person.
